Scam Alert!

To learn more about and / or to report a scam email, click here.

Seller, beware! From time to time you might receive suspicious inquiries about purchasing your bass. It's usually similar to the "Belgium music lessons" scam. The would-be purchaser sends you a check for more than the amount you are asking. He'll usually offer you something for your trouble, tell you to cash the check and then wire part or all of the overpayment back to him. The check is counterfeit, but by the time your bank notifies you of that fact, you've wired away your own money, which you may not be able to recover. The seller may also request that you take down your ad because you have sold the bass to him. If you receive a suspicious check in payment for an item for sale, have your bank guarantee its authenticity first, in writing if possible, and wait not only the funds to be deposited to your account, but also for the check to actually clear your bank. When in doubt, cut off all communication with a suspicious buyer. Do not engage in conversation, email or otherwise. You can also notify your state's attorney general or the FBI of a possible email scam.

String Setup: Low C Extension
Shape: Violin Corners
Additional Description: Beautiful 3/4 bass made in Turin in the wonderful Italian tradition. One of Agostinelli's last instruments, and possibly his only bass, as I have never seen or heard of another. Spruce top and beautiful flamed maple on the back and ribs. Violin corners. Orange-brown varnish. New fingerboard, full chromatic extension by Mike Shank, and machines from KC strings, all as of 2008. Health of the instrument is near-perfect. No cracks on the top or back, ever. No neck problems. Two small cracks on the top right rib, growing less than 1 inch per year. Could use a simple linen repair, otherwise, perfect condition. From its first appraisal in 2004, "The bass is 73 ¾ inches in length over all. The tables are 44 inches tall. The upper bout is 26 ¼ inches, the C bout is 15 ¼ inches and the lower bout is 26 ¼ inches. The ribs are between 6 ¾ to 7 7/8 inches deep. The measure is 41 (ish) inches. Extremely easy to play with sloped shoulders and great availability of the upper register. Clear tone with a high quality of sound and sweet upper register. Blends well, versatile. Bought as an undergrad at Juilliard and played through my master's and four years professionally since. Won several professional orchestral auditions with it and recently played it in the finals of the Alabama Principal audition. Great professional or high quality student instrument. Could make a great instrument for a jazz player. Available to view in the Cleveland area, I will not ship it at this time or travel far to show it. Will be at a shop in Cincinnati after the middle of July, until then, please contact me with any questions. More pics available by email.

String Setup: 4-string
Shape: Gamba corners, flat back
Additional Description: This is the instrument I played all through my school years and on which I won all my orchestra auditions. It's a truly special instrument and one of the finest American basses that I've ever seen. Huge, resonant tone with a special depth and power in the lower range. For a bass of this size it is extremely well set up and very easy to play, even in the upper register. I've played many solos and concertos on it with very good results. It underwent a full restoration in 1988 by Robert Daugherty and is in excellent overall condition. In 1999 additional work was done on the bass by Mario LaMarre, including a new bridge, fingerboard and low C extension. A fantastic instrument for a professional orchestral or jazz musician or a talented student. Comes with a Rob Messina case. Call or email for more information or to arrange a trial.

Performance Capacity: Orchestra and Jazz
Description: This the Kolstein Grand Panormo model made completely in the NY shop. It has been completely trouble free for me and is a great instrument for a graduate student or pro. It's a small 7/8 with plenty of volume, projects well, and plays evenly. I'm selling to get back into a vintage type bass and will miss having this one. The price is 16K which I believe is at least 1K less than new, and it has had a few years of "playing-in" for you. Includes the famous Kolstein adjustable bridge and compensating tailpiece, and a Mooradian bag. Email for more pictures and information.
