Over three years ago, The International Society of Bassists (ISB), a non-profit organization of performers, teachers, students, makers and fans of the double bass, invited singer, songwriter and composer Richard Thompson to compose a new work featuring his long-time friend and colleague, bassist Danny Thompson. The result was a concert-length song cycle with soloists, chorus and string orchestra. “Cabaret of Souls” had its world premiere at the historic State Theatre in State College, Pennsylvania on June 10, 2009.
The ISB still has a shortfall from the expenses for mounting this remarkable show. To close the gap, we have a fundraising goal of $5,000, and are offering a limited number of post-premiere donor packages. The top levels include an “as-it-happened,” live and in the moment CD recording of the concert.
For Richard Thompson and Danny Thompson completists, this is the only way to hear, or hear once more, a once-in-a-lifetime concert event. “Cabaret of Souls” takes on both the humor and pathos of the human condition in hell’s anteroom. Besides Danny Thompson on double bass and Richard Thompson on guitars and vocal, the cast features vocalist Judith Owen and percussionist/vocalist Debra Dobkin from Richard’s acclaimed “1000 Years of Popular Music” show, and comedian, actor and voice artist Harry Shearer as narrator and vocalist. Donate today, be part of the Cabaret of Souls project, and hear 30 new songs by Richard Thompson on a CD recording only available to supporters!
