ISB 2017 Convention : What to Expect When You Arrive

When You Arrive On Campus

There will be two signs, one directing you to on-campus housing check-in (go there first if you are staying on campus) and one for convention check-in at the Whalen Center for Music.

Pick up your badge at the ISB convention office in the Whalen Center of Music. (The campus will be closed Saturday, June 3rd from 6 AM to 6 PM for a previously scheduled electrical powerdown.

It admits you to all concerts and classes!

To access free Wi-Fi on campus, click on "Ithaca College-Guest" from available networks. Please note that Information transmitted or received over the Guest/Visitor wireless is not encrypted and could be intercepted and viewed by other network users.

Where to Eat On-Campus

The food court at the Campus Center will be open limited hours for breakfast and lunch. If you are staying on-campus, breakfast is included. If you purchased a meal plan for the week, beginning Monday evening and ending Saturday evening:

  • Pre-Purchased Meal Plan will be served in the Terraces Dining Hall. Parking is free, ignore the signs but stay out of designated/reserved parking spots - maintenance spots and vendor spots, etc.
  • Breakfast for on-campus residents only served in the Terraces Dining Hall, 7-9 AM, (those in line for breakfast by 9 AM will be served)
  • Lunch from 11:30 AM - 2 PM (those in line for lunch by 1:30 PM will be served)
  • Dinner 5:30 - 7 PM (those in line for dinner by 7 PM will be served)

Parking

Parking is free on campus in any space that is not reserved or handicap access.

If You Are Staying On Campus

  • You must have made a reservation to check into on-campus housing.
  • Your room includes pillow, blanket and bed linens, and towels, also a shower curtain. It does not have clothes hangers, television, telephone or radio.
  • Bring your own hair drier and toiletries (shampoo, soap, etc). Other useful items to bring include an alarm clock, drinking cup and an adaptor for electrical appliances if you are traveling from outside the U.S.
  • Parking is free in all lots, no permit required, do NOT park in reserved or handicap access spaces.
  • If you have a truck or RV, park in the "L" lot.
  • You will receive instructions for accessing Wi-Fi in the residence halls. Use the campus guest Wi-Fi elsewhere on campus (no password required).
  • No smoking or pets allowed in the residence halls, and no alcoholic beverages permitted in the public areas of the residence halls.
  • Breakfast is included with your on-campus room, go to the Terrace Dining Hall between 7 and 9 AM (if you are in line by 9 AM you will be served). You must show your badge and room key.
  • There is a charge for losing your room keys, $60 for the room key, $10 for the key fob for the outside door.

To Check In For On-Campus Housing

  • All on-campus residents go first to the Summer Housing Office in Emerson Hall to check in and get room keys. The physical address for Emerson Hall is 127 Brant Egbert Blvd. East, Ithaca, New York 14850.
  • The Summer Housing Office will be open from 9 AM to 9 PM.
  • If you arrive later than 9 PM, there will be a phone near the entrance for you to call for someone to let you in. It might take 10 to 20 minutes for someone to arrive. If a taxi is dropping you off, and you are staying in the Upper Quad or Garden Apartments, ask the taxi driver to wait for you so they can drive you to the Upper Quad or Garden Apartment with your luggage and instrument.
  • If you need help getting your luggage from Emerson Hall to your room in the Upper Quad or Garden Apartment, please call 972-404-0047, 214-564-8033 or 812-360-8561 (in that order) for assistance.

To Check Out Of On-Campus Housing

  • Check out time is 4 PM. You must check out by noon on Sunday, June 11th, no holdovers.
  • Leave your linens in the room.
  • You can drop off your room key and outside door key fob at the Summer Housing Office at Emerson Hall as you depart, OR you can use the drop box for keys located in all residence halls.
  • Remember, you will be charged for missing linens and keys!

If you need the on-campus address for your arrival documents, or you are shipping something to the convention, everything shipped to Ithaca College goes to Central Receiving, and it can take a day or two for items to be transferred over to the School of Music:

2017 ISB Convention Build-A-Bass-In-A-Week

Once again, a team of intrepid ISB makers led by Paul Hart are going to try to Build a Bass in just one week — varnish and all! Drop by the Dillingham Theater Scene Shop to watch the work in progress, ask questions, and maybe even lend a hand. Raffle tickets will be for sale only to convention attendees at the convention registration desk, $50 for one and the price per ticket goes down the more tickets you buy. The name of the lucky winner will be drawn on Friday night, just before the first evening concert. Need not be present to win, but winner is responsible for shipping/transportation costs to get the bass back home! Special thanks to our 2017 Build-a-Bass sponsor Upton Bass String Instrument Co.

2017 ISB Makers Competition Audience Favorite Voting & Sound Off Event

Once our judges complete their work on Monday, the competition opens up its doors to convention attendees for Audience Favorite Award voting on Tuesday, from 9 AM to 4 PM. Go to the Friends Green Room to see new basses made by luthiers from five countries, and vote for your favorite. Maker's Competition medal and certificate winners plus Audience Favorite awards will be announced along with solo competition winners beginning at 7:15 PM on Tuesday night before the evening's concerts in Ford Theater. On Wednesday, you'll be able to hear the competition basses played on the Hockett Family Recital Hall stage from 11 AM to 1 PM in our Maker's Competition Sound Off event.

Noontime Jam for Adult Bassists

One of the enjoyable ISB convention activities is the Noontime Jam, where bassists of all levels and backgrounds, especially those who don't earn their living laying the bass, can get together and read bass ensemble pieces from the ISB's Ensemble Library. Join us in the Hill Center, Room G 75 daily for hands-on technique building in a group setting, along with special guests. Our daily schedule will be announced on the Adult Learners page on ISBConnect.org.

Third Annual College Fair Day for Young Bassists

The ISB will host its fourth biennial College Fair Day, a networking event for college/university representatives and professors with students and their family members attending the 2017 ISB Convention at the Ithaca College School of Music, Saturday, June 10th, from 8:30 to 10 AM, on the third floor. If you're a student, make plans to be there and bring copies of your resume (list teachers, schools attended, honors, contact information). You'll have a chance to meet professors from schools across the country and around the world, and ask questions about their programs and opportunities!

Take Note! It's ISB After Hours!

Relax after a great day of concerts, lectures and shopping at nightly ISB After Hours hangs on campus. It's a great opportunity to renew ties with convention friends from past years and make new ones while enjoying an adult beverage. ISBers will be sitting in with some of the finest musicians on the Ithaca jazz scene. 10:30 AM to 12 PM, Tuesday through Saturday, Ithaca College Campus Center.
