Andrew Kohn is the chair of the research
competition for this convention. He is professor of string bass, music theory,
and music composition at West Virginia University. The former principal bassist
of the National Chamber Orchestra (now the National Philharmonic) and the
Harrisburg Symphony, he is a member of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and Opera
Orchestras. He has performed, lectured and adjudicated at several ISB
conventions as well as at the Third World Bass Festival (
Wrocław, Poland), the European Bass Community convention (Lucca, Italy) and at festivals of women composers. His compositions and editions for double bass are available through Jason Heath’s website and Sheet Music Plus. His work concerning bass repertoire and pedagogy has addressed Bach, Chihara, Koussevitzky, Marcello, Rabbath, Rossini, Simandl, and several pedagogical topics, as well as over 40 reviews for American
String Teacher
. This work has been published in Bass World, American String Teacher,
Música Hodie, Muzyka, Strad, and by Music Minus One. He also edited The
Collected Writings of Theron McClure
(Morris, 2013). His recordings include Allan Blank’s song cycles with string bass (Albany, 2012).
