Bio: | Mariechen Meyer is a prominent figure in South Africa's double bass performance and music education scene. Holding roles as a freelance performer, private instructor, and part-time lecturer at institutions in Gqeberha, including Nelson Mandela University, she exudes a passion for the double bass that began in her youth. This passion has led her to diverse musical endeavors, from presenting at the International Society of Bassists Convention to performing with renowned ensembles like the Bassinova Quartet and iPalpiti Artists International in the United States. Her musical journey has seen her participate in international competitions, attend workshops across the US and Europe, and collaborate as a soloist with orchestras such as the University of North Texas Symphony Orchestra, Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, and Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra. Starting her studies with Peter Guy and completing her undergraduate degree with Roxane Steffen, she further honed her skills with a master's and doctoral degree from the University of North Texas with Jeff Bradetich. Beyond her performance and teaching, Mariechen founded the South African Strings Foundation, dedicated to advancing string performance, pedagogy, and research in Southern Africa. | |
