Bio:

As a boy Gunars Upatnieks was more interested in
rowing and basketball, but at age 13 he followed in his father’s footsteps and
took up the double bass. Gunars studied at the music academies of Riga and
Brno, where he was a pupil of Miloslav Jelinek, and is the winner of numerous
international competitions, including first prize at the 2007 ISB Solo
Competition, first prize and audience award at the 58th ARD
International Music Competition, and first prize and audition award at the 5th
International Sperger Competition. He served as principal bass in the Latvian
National Symphony Orchestra and as assistant principal bass in the Bergen
Philharmonic Orchestra before joining the Berlin Philharmonic in 2011. Gunars
has also appeared as a soloist and with ensembles such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony
and Nordic Symphony orchestras, and with conductors Mariss Jansons, Neeme Järvi
and Mstislav Rostropovich. He is a professor at the Hanns Eisler
Musikhochschule Berlin, and regularly teaches at various European universities,
such as the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Amsterdam University of
Arts. In his free time, Gunars enjoys travel and still plays basketball
regularly.
