|Presentation Title:||Jiri Slavik in Recital|
|Type of Presentation:||Recital|
|Bio:||Jiri Slavik (1986) was born and raised in the eastern part of the Czech Republic. Having left his homeland at fourteen years of age, he first studied the double bass in Rome with Massimo Giorgi and then in London with Duncan McTier. In 2007 he moved to Paris, where he lived for seven years as a free-lance artist and a teacher. It was during this period that he met bassists Peter Herbert, Mark Dresser and Barre Phillips, who have become a great influence on him and massively encouraged him to develop further his musical conceptions and bass playing.
Since September 2012 he is part of the jazz faculty at the Academy of Music and Arts (HAMU) in Prague and at the Janáček Academy (JAMU) in Brno, Czech Republic. He performs on a 5-string doublebass previously owned by Barre Phillips, who passed it on to him. Since 2010 he is sponsored by D’Addario Strings.
His latest album, “Mateřština” (meaning mothertongue), which presents him as a multi-instrumentalist exploring the musical heritage of his birth region, received a high critical acclaim as well as the Anděl award for the best Czech album (category World Music) in 2016.
