Presentation Title: Boundless Soundscapes: a performance by Shade & Light Duo (Megan McDevitt and Betsy Soukup)

Megan has worked extensively as an orchestral musician, having performed regularly with the bass sections of the San Francisco Bay Area and Ann Arbor area. Festivals she has attended include Mendocino, Aspen, Norfolk Chamber Festival, and Future Music Lab at Atlantic Music Festival, where she composed and performed with electronics. Megan’s performance focus has recently turned to new music, performing with Slee Sinfonietta, Null Point, Wooden Cities, and with ÆPEX Ensemble, in addition to commissioning new solo bass works. She is half of the bass duo Shade & Light (with Betsy Soukup) which strives to create performances that are transformative for audiences as well as themselves. After completing her DMA at the University of Michigan with Diana Gannett, she moved to Buffalo, where she serves as Associate Director and Artist Teacher for Buffalo String Works, a program that teaches music to children from refugee families. Megan’s interests extend to the research of gender in the field of music (particularly of bassists), and she has lectured on this topic at the ISB convention in Ithaca and at the Great Lakes Regional CMS Conference.
