Andrew Brown came late to the double bass at eighteen, but soon completed an honors degree in Bass Performance at Catholic University in Washington, DC. He then headed off to Vienna, Austria, where he studied with Heinrich Schneikart, Ludwig Streicher and Josef Niederhammer and had a successful free-lance career in styles ranging from opera to hard rock. Contemporary and avant-garde music were particular favorites, though he made his living mostly by touring with Salonorchester Alhambra, a 1920’s repertory band. Dr. Brown fostered an interest in stringed instruments working for Christine Eriks Geigenbau in Vienna, and was hired in 1999 by the Institut fuer Wiener Klangstil as an assistant researching violin acoustics. There he completed his PhD in Music Acoustics and returned to accept a teaching position with the German School Washington, DC in 2004. Since resigning in 2017 he is primarily focused on bass manufacture.
